Sanctity or Fake. The building of the religious celebrity of sor Patrocinio (1830-1835)

This article analyses the building of the religious celebrity of sor Patrocinio, famous for being stigmata, and who was prosecuted in 1835. The extraordinary phenomena she experienced were related to a religious cosmovision which was suspicious of the changes brought by the fall of the Ancien Régime, and it was expressed through the vicarious suffering as a mean of relieving the adverse consequences of the revolution. However, although the trial conducted against sor Patrocinio intended to neutralize its potential political manipulation by the enemies of liberalism, the court case was decisive for turning the nun into a celebrity.
