The diocese of Ceuta was created in 1417, two years after the Portuguese occupation of that place. It was linked to the patriarchate of Lisbon for two centuries and a half and to the ecclesiastical province of Seville since 1675, once Ceuta was incorporated to Spain. Its scarce territory (less than 20 km2) and population (several thousands of inhabitants) was the reason why the Concordate of 1851 between Spain and the Vatican took into account the incorporation of that little Northafrican bishopric to that one in Cadiz. Due to some different reasons the agreement was not carried out until more than a quarter of a century later, in 1879. This paper provides us with a well-documented analysis of the process of merging of both dioceses.
