Christian freedom and political submission in Lutheran thought

This article is aimed to show the crucial significance of the notion of «Christian freedom» for Luther’s political reflections, as it enables us to directly reveal the foundations of his ecclesiological doctrines and to indirectly investigate the deepest basis upon which his theory of civil authority is elaborated. This leads us to point to the central role played by certain elements of Lutheran voluntarist theology, which give unity to Luther’s thought and which, in the last instance, constitute a theological-political model of doubtless influence on modern times.
