In 1939, Fray Tomás Borgmeier founded "Cor. Revista Eclesiástica Brasileira", which in 1941 was changed simply to "Revista Eclesiástica Brasileira" (=REB), maintaining the same structure and orientation it has today. From the beginning its readers, generally ecclesiastics, were protagonists in the endeavor and were accustomed to collaborating actively, submitting chronicles, obituaries, short articles, bibliographical notes, and other diverse sources of information REB has had four editors-in-chief: Tomás Borgmeier (1941-1952), Boaventura Kloppenburg (1953-1971), Leonardo Boff (1972-1985) and its present editor, Elói D. Piva, who assumed his position in 1986. It was under its second editor that the publication reached its greatest circulation and contributed decisively to the reception of Vatican II in Brasil. Its third editor provoked important but polemical theological discussion, but, under its present editor, the journal has since regained an aire of calm and dialogue.
