Very little historiographical research has been done on the Catholic clergy in northern Peru during the years of Peru’s war for independence from Spain. This article investigates the personal concerns, survival strategies, and political behavior of several members of the upper clergy of the Bishopric of Trujillo during the tempestuous decades of the 1810s and 1820s. This approach privileges the Peruvian people’s sense of uncertainty and chaos during the long war for independence.
