Abstract

Around 1557, friar (Brother) Domingo de Valtanás, prior of the Dominican convent of Seville, wrote a brief treaty called Exposición sobre el estado y velo de las monjas. In that treatise, written in Spanish, the friar offered the nuns of his Order an explanation about the duties and the advantages of the condition of life that they had embraced.

The Esposición is an expression of the maturity of a historical process, the reform of the religious orders, able to create a social representation of consecrated women’s life that has definitely determined its future evolution.
