Abstract

The present article analyzes some of the religious implications deriving from the famous controversy about the legality or illegality of theatre in the 17th century and in the city of Valencia. The question arose from an episode in which Don Luis Crespi de Borja was directly implicated. Crespi was the founder of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in the Valencian region and a persistent fighter against comedy. As a consequence of his position in this affair members of the Oratory were pursued by other ecclesiastical sectors favouring theatre.
