The author defends the necessity of the popular religiosity study to understand the History of the Church. He reviews some of the most recent theories about this issue. He also studies in depth the theory about the «cofradías» in Cuenca during the Modem Age. This study is based on the documents found in the «Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cuenca» and in the «Archivo Municipal» of its capital.
