Abstract

Titular bishops have a very special status in the ecclesiastic hierarchy. We know their existence in the compostellan diocese since the first years of the XVth century. They act as auxiliary bishops of the compostellan archbishops. Their intervention in the diocesan life is limited by the archiepiscopal procuratorio and it does not interfere with the prerrogatives of other diocesan officials. The main reasan of their presence is the frequent absence of the ordinary bishops and the special liturgical needs of the compostellan cathedral. The biographic news about these prelates are very unequal and show different levels of participation in the diocesan activity.
