Modernists were not a sect. Nor did they produce a system. For that reason, they did not recognize themselves in the Pascendi Dominici gregis. And judged unjust the hostility coming from those that identified Catholicism and antimodernism. They considered themselves as a group of friends. They exchanged and discussed their writings and their experiences. In the history of modernism their correspondence is of great value. They themselves understood it that way and kept the letters they wrote or received. For that reason it is necessary to go trough the works published since the sixties by the researchers of the Centro studi per la storia del modernismo of the University of Urbino.
