Abstract

This paper deals with the process of foundation of an important monastery of Clarises in Castile, that of Alcocer, about the mid 13th century. It is one of the most prominent examples of the implantation of the mendicant orders in the whole of today's Castilla-La Mancha territory. The foundation was the result of a joint effort on the part of both the Guzman family and the Castillan monarchy, and was established, according to certain information, on the grounds of a preexistent feminine religious life germ.
