Abstract

The aim of this article is to offer an analysis of the efforts that the anti-Enlightenment and counterrevolutionary ecclesiastical reaction, as well as certain sectors of the Hispanic medical establishment undertook at the end of the 18th century to establish and define a medical-theological understanding of the human being in accordance with traditional Catholic postulates, and contrary to the new models of the Enlightenment. Likewise, it explores the challenges that the new eighteenth-century scientific discoveries about the body and nervous irritability posed when articulating a conception of spirituality, corporeality and the passions that could not simply ignore the contributions of Enlightenment medicine. To this end, it will focus on analyzing the medical-theological treatise El hombre físico, in which the former Jesuit Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro attempted to combine the central elements of the post-Tridentine Catholic anthropology of the passions with the advances in the conception of the body characteristic of eighteenth-century medicine. In doing so, the aim is to explore the dialectic character that defined the emotional culture of the anti-Enlightenment reaction to the sentimental style of the Enlightenment, but also its areas of contact, borrowings and transfers.
