“I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee”: encounter, experience and familiarity with God within the drama of suffering in medieval thought

In this article we analyse the medieval interpretation of Job 42:5-6 as a particular case study from which to look at the medieval Christian understanding of the drama of human suffering. These verses (“I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee./ Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes”) are of great importance not only in the overall interpretation of the book of Job but also in the interpretation of the problem it raises —namely the meaninglessness of suffering and the apparent incompatibility of the belief in a perfectly good and all-powerful God with the existence of evil. Thus, knowing how they were interpreted in the Middle Ages can tell about how they understood and experienced the problem of suffering. According to medieval exegetes Job’s words show a progress in knowledge or familiarity with God (affective and experiential knowledge) capable of pacifying and enlightening the sufferer.
