In 1770 the central administration carried out an inquiry all over Spain so as to get to know the number of religious brotherhoods, their economic means, and their activities. This was intended in order to do away with certain practicies contrary to their constitution. Another goal was to reduce the number of religious brotherhoods. This paper uses the information cantained in the inquiry and studies the brotherhoods within the kingdom of Navarra. The study focusses upon their devotions, their sees, the approvals by civil and religious authorities, and their economic status, special attention is drawn to guild fraternities in the city of Pamplona.
