This paper is concerned with the debate on the secularizacion of parishes in the Philippines during the second half of the 19th century, as analyzed from the perspective of the Archipelago. The essay analyzes both the arguments put forth in the debate and the facts that determined the revival of a problem inherited from the 18th century, the period in which the ultimate roots and the explanation for such disputes have to be sought. Written on the basis of one of the numerous libels published at the time, the essay forms part of the larger project whose aim is to study the history of the parishes in the Archipelago from the second half of the 18th century to the end of the Spanish rule.
